Abstract:

Heterogeneous cellular networks are a comprehensive approach to provide high cellular network capacity by densely overlaying conventional macro-cell cellular architecture with heterogeneous architectural features such as small cells. Inspired by the attractive features and potential advantages of heterogeneous cellular networks, their development and deployment is gaining momentum in the wireless industry and research communities during the last few years. In the first part, the tutorial provides an introduction to stochastic geometry, including the main models and the key results that enable analysis of network performance metrics such as transmission success probabilities, throughput, and delay. In the second part, we motivate how stochastic geometry and spatial averaging can be useful to characterize the network performance of heterogeneous cellular networks by providing several scenarios including base station cooperation, interference cancellation, full-duplex radios, backhauling, cloud radio access networks, Massive MIMO, and energy harvesting. Lastly, we conclude by providing future research directions of heterogeneous cellular networks and their role in 5G.
